The renowned Dutch architectural design firm MVRDV's first project in Poland, Batyk, took nearly 6 years to complete.
This glass building located in the center of Poznan is 67 meters high and has 16 floors. Although it may seem unremarkable at first glance, walking around the building will reveal that its appearance is very versatile. It sometimes has a slender figure and sometimes a large volume, like playing a block game. The architect created a unique polyhedron by pulling away the blocks in different directions.
On the south side of the building, the architect transformed the upper half of the building into a stepped structure, creating layers of outdoor spaces that allow people to step out of the glass tower and enjoy the city's scenery. Anton Wubben, the architect of MVRDV, stated that this treatment not only increases the public space on the ground, but also further highlights the entrance of the building.
The entire building's exterior facade is decorated with floor to ceiling glass, and a frame made of fiberglass reinforced concrete is added to the exterior. This framework structure was inspired by the famous local building Okraglak in Poznan, but the latter, designed by Polish architect Marek Leykam, used traditional concrete to create a square frame. For the Baatyk building, this outward protruding frame structure can also provide some shading and cooling effects, while not obstructing the view of building users while enjoying the urban landsca
