Rise Design Studio adds glass extensions to houses in North London

Rise Design Studio has added glass expansion panels to the rear of the London house, creating a well lit kitchen and dining room with access to the garden (+slides). As the demand for modern housing expansion continues to grow throughout the capital, this London based company has designed the Burrows Road addition project for a couple and their daughter to live in Kensal Rise.

The purpose is to provide a large kitchen and dining room for this family in the rear of the mid-level house.

The company has also reconfigured and renovated the entire lower level to introduce more light and better connect different areas.

Rise Design Studio Director Sean Ronnie Hill told Dezeen, "The existing honeycomb bottom layout does not show cohesion or efficiency, and it is difficult for light to penetrate into the existing space

The proposal is to improve the lighting quality and cut down the existing different interior floor layouts to allow for an open area and provide more fluidity between the kitchen and dining room, TV room, and backyard

The architect removed the side walls at the back of the house and sewed glass windows into the gap between the house and the boundary wall of the site, which has become a feature of the new space.

Hill said, "The alley has become an internal space, and through frameless glass envelopes, one can enjoy the view of the sky and backyard from the depths of the floor plan

The exterior walls were reinforced with bricks recycled during the demolition period. Now, it supports a sloping glass roof that bridges the gaps between the brick structures.

The rear wall has also been partially removed, and a large sliding glass door connecting the kitchen and garden is installed in the gap.

Internally, accessories and finishes remain simple. The white kitchen cabinet is located on one side of the space and features an island with a brass faucet. Hanging chandeliers of the same material above.

The dining table is located on the other side of the room, under the glass roof.

In order to improve circulation, a new opening has been created between the kitchen and a dark, "cave like" TV room.

Due to the presence of mice, all original wooden floors must be replaced. The architect selected four different types of surfaces to distinguish the space.

Behind the confusing tiles in the entrance hall are the old oak flooring of the front reception room and TV room, while the polished cement flooring of the open kitchen dining area extends to the open flame basalt stone on the external terrace.

The courtyard also includes a bicycle storage area suspended under a steel frame. It is positioned on one of the existing boundary walls to match the dark gray tone of the sliding door frame.

Rise Design Studio was founded by Sean Ronnie Hill in 2011. The company's previous projects included renovating apartments in 19th century London mansions.

Burrows Road is one of the many modern residential expansion projects recently completed in London, driven by the growing demand for modern design. Other examples include a property located in East Dulwich, which features a three meter high revolving door and an extension of a butterfly shaped roof in North London.
