Verallia has opened the world's largest all electric furnace for glass packaging at its Cognac factory in France.
The new melting pot was officially completed on September 10, 2024 at Cognac Brandy. This 180 ton/day kiln, equivalent to 300000 bottles, will mainly be used for the Flagship Cognac brand. This makes it the world's largest glass packaging electric furnace.
Patrice Lucas, CEO of Verallia Group, said, "We are very proud to be a pioneer in this field. This is our 100% electric furnace, which fully demonstrates our CSR roadmap and ambitious investment plan to optimize energy consumption in our factory and develop low-carbon furnaces. This project is a joint collaboration with Fives Group, where we have established new standards for carbon free smelting
Verallia and engineering group Fives signed a strategic partnership in 2022, enabling Verallia to reduce carbon emissions. This technology - Proton E-Melt developed by FAW - is one of the advanced technologies that can be used to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the factory level.
Compared with traditional gas stoves that emit 30000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, the new stove reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 60% at the factory level, emitting 12000 to 14000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. It also improves energy efficiency: approximately 95% of the energy is directly used for glass production.
Guillaume Mehlman, President of Fives Steel and Glass, said, "This is a strategic project for Verallia and Fives as leaders in low-carbon glass manufacturing technology. Our technology will change the game in the industry because it can achieve the highest glass quality with the lowest energy input and carbon emissions
