The huge energy received by the glass curtain wall can be quickly transmitted to the underground through the building's grounding system, which can effectively prevent the glass curtain wall and the building from being damaged by lightning.
Some 100 meter tall buildings cannot prevent lightning strikes solely by relying on the lightning arrester on the roof. In order to provide more comprehensive lightning protection, it is necessary to install a pressure equalization ring every three floors above 30 meters on the glass curtain wall and connect it with the building's lightning protection and the glass curtain wall's lightning protection.
Lightning protection and grounding method for glass curtain walls: During construction, before pouring concrete, the steel bars used as down conductors should be selected and firmly welded to form electrical connections. The welding length should be greater than or equal to 2 times the width of the flat steel, and it should be three sided welding. Six times the width of the round steel should be directly and double-sided welding.
Lightning protection measures for glass curtain walls: Starting from the sixth floor, a galvanized flat steel should be laid every three floors and welded to a steel bar with a diameter of 12 for the down conductor. The length of the welding should meet the standard and there should be no defects such as cracks or undercutting. Two coats of anti rust paint should be applied to the welding area. All vertical main frames can be crimped using expandable "Ω" made of 40 × 4 aluminum alloy. Two M8 stainless steel through bolts should be crimped from top to bottom at the connection point, and spring washers and stainless steel flat washers should be added. In summary, the curtain wall structure should be effectively connected to the lightning protection system of the building structure from top to bottom. At the top, all metal main components of the curtain wall and parapet must be effectively connected to the lightning protection belt mesh, and below, they must also be effectively connected to the equalizing ring. At the bottom, they must also be effectively connected to the lightning protection device.
